Quick question for Galaxy Z Fold 8 users who pre-ordered the phone in July: How would you feel if your Fold 8 still hadn't shipped and you had to wait until November to use it for the first time?
Think about that for a moment, and you'll get an idea of what iPhone Duo pre-order customers in many markets are going through right now. I, for one, wouldn't want to be in their shoes.
In case you missed the news, Apple messed up its iPhone Duo launch by overextending beyond available stock and launching the phone in many more markets than it planned initially. As a result, Apple quickly ran out of stock, and shipping dates in many markets slipped from October 2026 to January 25, 2027.
The delay isn't caused by sales records but by mismanagement and false expectations. It's a low blow for iPhone Duo customers who weren't lucky enough to place their orders in the first 30 minutes after launch. It's even worse for fans who have waited years for Apple to show Samsung who's boss in the foldable phone niche.
For Samsung fans, such a delay or bait-and-switch strategy would be unacceptable. Unfortunately, Apple fans don't have an iPhone Duo alternative. Or do they?
An opportunity for Samsung to shine even brighter
The good news for us on the blue team is that Apple's failure surrounding the iPhone Duo reveals some truths about the foldable phone market and paints Samsung in a better light. It could even lead to a better next-gen Fold model in 2027.
The iPhone Duo's delayed launch seems tragic for countless Apple fans, but I can't help but wonder how it could benefit Samsung and its customers.
Samsung is the reliable choice before the holidays
Samsung successfully released not one but three mainline foldable models earlier in the summer. The Galaxy Z Fold 8, along with the Flip 8 and Fold 8 Ultra, went on sale globally as planned.
This means you can buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 right now. And even if the Fold 8 isn't your cup of tea, Samsung offers two other mainline models you can choose from.
Better yet, you don't have to worry about availability. If you order now, Samsung will most likely ship your Galaxy Z Fold 8 — or another model — well before the holidays. Unfortunately, Apple is probably the least reliable choice right now if you are hoping to use a foldable phone this year or gift one to someone dear.
Proof that it wasn't easy for Samsung to create a new line of products
Interestingly, this unfortunate event surrounding Apple also highlights that Samsung has more experience tackling difficulties in the foldable phone supply chain. That expertise was earned through years of research and effort, and while Apple may have learned a few things from Samsung through observation, it probably wasn't enough.
Whether Apple underestimated the manufacturing process or intentionally widened the iPhone Duo's launch, knowing it would lead to delays, is unclear. The results are the same: iPhone Duo pre-order customers, some of which have observed Samsung for years, are suffering.
Some expected the Cupertino giant to take over the foldable phone market soon after the iPhone Duo's debut. However, it turns out that making foldable phones isn't easy. Samsung has been playing the game for years and may be better prepared, but for Apple, this is new territory.
Samsung's apparent readiness also inspires confidence that Fold 8 replacement parts won't be difficult to find. Maybe Apple won't have such issues either, but it's too early to tell. For now, Apple is struggling to get the phone out in the hands of more pre-order customers. Who knows what comes next?!
The Galaxy Z Fold 9 is already breathing down the iPhone Duo's neck
Lastly, Samsung could and should use this disappointing Apple iPhone Duo launch to fuel its own ambitions. A delayed iPhone Duo leaves an opportunity open for Samsung to convince countless Apple fans that its reputation in the foldable phone game is truly earned.
The timing could really work in Samsung's favor. By the time the iPhone Duo reaches customers who pre-ordered it, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will already be six months old.
Even more worrying for Apple is that Samsung may announce the Galaxy Z Fold 9 in the summer of 2027, or just six months after the iPhone Duo will ship in most regions. This could be enough to convince some early iPhone Duo adopters, who may not be as loyal to Apple, to cancel their orders and instead buy the Fold 8 before the end of the year.
If Samsung plays its cards right, it could win over disappointed iPhone Duo fans who are eager to experience foldable display technology today. Why wait four months for the iPhone Duo when you can buy the Fold 8 today? Why buy the iPhone Duo in January when you can wait six more months for Samsung to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 9?
All in all, I hope Apple's misstep will convince Samsung that now is the moment to innovate. The Fold 8 isn't perfect and feels first-gen in some areas, but it arguably is a better phone-tablet hybrid option than the iPhone Duo. The Fold 8's lightweight, symmetrical design should not be overlooked.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 showed the way and the iPhone Duo fumbled at the start. Samsung's next-gen Galaxy Z Fold 9 will have to widen the advantage, which could lead to an incredible product.
Apple effectively gifted Samsung a chance to do even better and prove why it's been the foldable market leader for years. Samsung only needs to seize the moment and capitalize on Apple's mistake in more clever and substantial ways beyond poking fun in short ads.
